Magpies are known as collectors, gatherers of shiny things and small treasures. In folklore, they’re seen as messengers, keepers of small treasures, or even guardians of secrets. When I moved to England in 2020, I saw my first magpie, just one, and it stuck with me.
There’s an old rhyme here:
One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.
These days, most people see the rhyme as a gentle superstition. A reminder that even the smallest details can hold meaning, and that life’s story is filled with little signs and symbols. For me, it’s a reflection of what I want One Magpie to stand for: the quiet power of a single moment, a single voice, a single story.
So why One Magpie? Because it’s just me: one voice, one vision, one small story at a time. But also because I believe in the value of collecting memories, patterns, and ideas. Each one a small piece of a bigger story.
One voice, one vision, one choice at a time. That’s enough to begin.
And that’s what One Magpie is; a gentle, persistent reminder that the small things matter. Because they’re what build the life we want, piece by piece.
