Magpies are known as collectors, gatherers of shiny things and small treasures. In folklore, they’re seen as messengers, keepers of small treasures, or even guardians of secrets. When I moved to England in 2020, I saw my first magpie, just one, and it stuck with me.
There’s an old rhyme here:
One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.
These days, most people see the rhyme as a gentle superstition. A reminder that even the smallest details can hold meaning, and that life’s story is filled with little signs and symbols. For me, it’s a reflection of what I want One Magpie to stand for: the quiet power of a single moment, a single voice, a single story.
That idea carries through everything I do. Whether I’m working on a manuscript or creating a guided journal, I’m paying attention to the small things. The patterns, the details, the pieces that don’t quite fit yet, and the ones that matter more than they seem.
So why One Magpie? Because it’s just me: one voice, one perspective, working closely with each story. But also because I believe in the value of collecting those small pieces. Not just memories and ideas, but structure, clarity, and meaning.
Each one is part of something bigger. And when they’re brought together with care, they shape a story that feels complete.
And that’s what One Magpie is; a gentle, persistent reminder that the small things matter. Because they’re what build the life we want, piece by piece.
One voice, one vision, one step at a time. That’s enough to begin.

Today, I work with writers on their manuscripts and story-driven projects, and create guided journals that support reflection and personal storytelling.
